Description

Crispy and flavorful Onion Ring Chips that are perfect for any occasion, easy to make, and budget-friendly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions (Yellow or white)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions by peeling and slicing them into thin rings, about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Make the batter by whisking together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl. In another bowl, mix the egg and buttermilk.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry, stirring until just combined.
  4. Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Dredge a handful of onion rings in the batter, ensuring complete coating.
  6. Fry the battered rings in batches for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Drain the onion ring chips on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  8. Season with additional salt while hot for optimal flavor.

Notes

For a twist, try adding spices like paprika or cayenne for heat, or cheese for a savory flavor.
